EXPERIMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE CALCULATION OF EVAPOTRANSPIRATION – THE CASE OF THE CENTRAL VALLEY OF CATAMARCA (ARGENTINE)

ABSTRACT: Evapotranspiration (ET) consists of a soil-atmosphere energy exchange, and in order to estimate it, instrumental determinations, empirical methods or semi theoretical equations are applied. Among  the most used  methods  in Argentine,  the Thornthwaite´s formula (1948), the Turc´s formula (1961) and the Penman´s formula (1948), which was modified in 1963 (Penman-Monteith’s method) are highlighted. The Penman-Monteith’s procedure has been updated by FAO in 1990 and allows calculating reference ET by combining meteorological information and satellite imagery.

In the Province of Catamarca (Argentina), water constitutes a scanty resource. Nevertheless, ET’s estimations are reduced to punctual localities generally solved by Thornthwaite’s formula.

Following a case-study approach, feasibility for applying new experimental technologies for ET’s estimations -using Penman-Monteith-‘s method- in the Central Valley of the province of Catamarca (Argentina) is analyzed.
